Puck 518

Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Daphne Tyler (aka Taylor)
NOVEMBER VOTING INCENTIVE FOR ALL! So the deal here (again) is that I've been working on background images for that bonus comic I keep working on. I had some backgrounds of scenery from my city drawn and colored but nothing that would make a good voting incentive. So I quickly drew a pic of Phoebe, smacked something together and the end result actually looks pretty good! VOTE TO BE AN ENGAGED CITIZEN! As for this comic... Tyler has so much to learn. Poor, hapless fool.

Happy future wife, happy future life. As messed up as what Daphne did was.

  • This is beautifully written: a joke based on setting up then breaking the “I’m sorry” pattern, character development in the punchline AND in Ty’s catalog of grievances (AND his first-panel confession), and advancing to a major milestone in the story of these two.

I liked the touching gesture in panel one which silently shows she forgives his part in the screw-up (Less Mature Daphne might have used this to shift the blame), the different nervous gestures in the next 2 panels, and the 4th-panel ambiguous pose: nervous gesture or a feminine display? So hard to tell sometimes IRL.

  • Paul

If he could only read those emotive ears in the last panel!

    • Wyvern

Don’t animals usually put their ears back when they feel threatened?

      • Blood also rushes to our face when we feel threatened, as though we might be about to be punched in the face and our body wants to be sure we squirt enough blood to clot any wounds quickly.

Humans have a physiological reaction to embarrassment that does not distinguish between a physical and emotional “attack”. Daphne’s physiology is a little different, but the same routines are running.

    • ElectricGecko

I think they can mean many things all at once.

  • Frank Harr

Too late to run now, lad.

And yes, women in nice clothing are SO distracting.

It’s nice that he admits his part in this. Very mature. But we all know they’ll make up. 🙂

You know, what he didn’t do can be can be a hard thing to do. No follow up. It’s just hard. At least the first few times.

    • Drakeye

The downfall of many a man and woman.

    • ElectricGecko

Enh, the power of cleavage is … limited. Because cleavage is an obvious attention getter and obvious attention getting will not always get you what you want. Unless all you want is attention. And Daphne isn’t really showing any cleavage here anyway.

  • justawriter

Could have used more ear droop in panel two

  • Drakeye

so much emoting with the ears

  • Lokitsu

So very odd to see Daphne honestly apologetic. The payoff though is panel 4 where she looks absolutely adorable. Tyler doesn’t stand a chance.

    • ElectricGecko

She CAN be honest! Sometimes! And adorable! Sometimes! Just not all the time. But really, who wants consistency? Consistency is boring.

      • MSG Bob

Wasn’t it Emerson who wrote that “Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds”? Of course, it could have been two other guys for all I remember.

        • ElectricGecko

Lake and Palmer were the most quotable personalities of the prog rock scene.

        • Ralph Waldo Emerson, yes.
Though he calls it “a foolish consistency”, and doesn’t distinguish between a foolish consistency and a wise consistency.
Consistently doing a wise thing over and over is how successful careers and businesses happen. Consistently doing a foolish thing over and over is how successful politicians happen.

          • ElectricGecko

I consistently do ‘meh’ things with my life. Not sure what that makes me. Consistently meh, I suppose.

  • JJR

She had a plan there was nothing master about it.

  • pat

How many scores on Phoebe’s side now?

  • Tio Willie

Oh you poor, poor fool. Helpless. It’s o.k. Tyler we have all been there.

  • JJR

I just realized Ty softened the blow with that compliment in the middle of his rant.
Plot twist Daphne was the pawn in his master plan!

  • They’re actually doing pretty well. Especially for teenagers.

  • ChrisH

I love Daphne’s expression in the last panel. Perhaps she’s finally getting a break in this problematical prom?

  • Glenn Host

I think Daphne has the muscle control to be able to move each ear but her emotions control them. It would be interesting to play poker with her and see if they are tells.

Oh and on the Puck “Masters of the Universe” costume it makes Puck look like she is trying to hide a pregnancy while in few cartoons I saw it was more of weirdly placed tassel.

    • ElectricGecko

Puck already noted that her ears ruin her poker face. I imagine it’s a lot like people with a nervous tic – you can control it if you really concentrate, but the second your concentration drops, the automatic motor function takes over.

As for the Teela costume, the tassel thing at the front is weird. I don’t understand it and I don’t like it. Down with tassels.

  • Zorn

Ty has her right where she wants him. Poor sap has no idea.

    • ElectricGecko

One would think. There’s an issue with this scenario, though: Daphne is inexperienced at this too. Very. And it’s like they say in fencing: the most unpredictable fencing match is a fencing match between two people who have never fenced before.

  • DMC_Run

“Not only am I angry for all the reasons (given in Panels 2_&_3), but I’m also angry at how difficult you’re making it for me to be angry — it’s TOTALLY Not Fair — I’m the injured party here, after all! You’re trying to escape the consequences by playing the “Cuteness”-card!!!”
    (…heavy sigh…)
    “I’ve gotta go — I’m neglecting my prom-date.”
    #Now_Why_Can’t_I_Be_This_Articulate_When_I_Need_To_Be?

    • ElectricGecko

I’m still not sure whether you felt this was well played or not.

      • DMC_Run

        [ElectricGecko]:
        The answer is — both.
Some parts were very-much well-played, & some parts were very-much not-so-well-played. What’s so impressive (to me) is how both extremes were able to avoid “half-assing” their respective roles.

  • mermaidan

It’s easy to see that these two are meant to be together, if they don’t self-destruct first.

  • ChrisH

Yes, the chapter is ending soon, but the teen angst won’t. 😉

  • Greg White

    Was Hannah born blind?

  • SalemKatte

    BE WARY TONITE

Some of those “Trick or Treaters” aren’t really wearing costumes.

AND …. the YULE CAT is beginning to stir.

(which is why SalemCat is in hiding)

    • ElectricGecko

      Oh man. Not this again!

      • SalemCat

        @EG

        Whew !

        SalemKatte has retreated once again.

He sure had some tales to tell, tho.

This year’s Samhain on the Brocken was exceptionally warm, so the witches wore exceptionally little.

Of course Mel (which is what Satan is known by to his close friends) was there.

But TRACEEE was missing ! For the first time ever.

When I told SalemKatte she was babysitting, he gave me a sly look – as if “babysitting” were code for something else.

But I set him straight – TRACEEE was babysitting, plain and simple.

        He left, dumdfounded.

I wonder if he’ll tell mom ? (Jolakottur)

  • SalemKatte

And this year Jólakötturinn is going after your plumbing.

  • Bob

Don’t know how this happened but it looks like looks like Puck’s votes on Top Webcomics got reduced to 0. I normally see it in the top 50 at worst. Didn’t know where to put this but I figured I’d better bring it up.
    Thanks

    • ElectricGecko

It’s the first of the month. Everyone gets cranked back to 0 at the beginning of the month. So yeah, that sounds likely. You were looking at the score at 3 am so it’s highly likely that you were the first vote of November. Thanks for your diligence!

  • Frank Harr

Regarding the voting insentive, the Washington Nationals just won the city it’s first baseball championship in over eighty years. Mind you, for a number of those decades, they didn’t even have a team, but score one for the plucky Nats!

    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/with-world-series-title-washington-nationals-cement-their-comeback-season

It’s nice to not have to go far to jump off a cliff or to jump in a lake. You can tell people to go do all sorts of things to themselves.

Yeah, that’s a thing. It’s worse in other places. :/

I should see a CFL game some day. Just so see the difference.

    • ElectricGecko

There are few differences between the CFL and the NFL. The field is a different size, I think, and a few rules are slightly different, but that’s it. The main difference (or so I’ve been told by football fiends) is the quality of the game. Sadly, the CFL is in a position where it just gets to pick up the NFL’s scraps, which means the CFL contains players of a … much lower calibre, shall we say? I mean, if you were a truly great football player, you’d be a fool to play in the CFL, making about the same salary as a McDonalds night manager.

And even within that somewhat humble environment, The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are a ‘special’ team. In the 60’s and 70’s they were the powerhouse of the league, but during my lifetime, they’ve mostly been the worst team in the tiny league.

That said, they’ve got a small but rabid fan base that makes their games fun to watch. And their uniforms and logo are top notch.

  • ChrisH

I like the new picture of Phoebe. Oh, yeah, Hamilton’s there too, well, a tiny bit of it. I would like to see the cliff. I don’t think in my travels I have seen a cliff in the middle of a big city. Now I’m curious. Oh, and thank goodness Halloween is over, I don’t want that Yule Cat to eat me. (Poor Iceland, no wonder they have a smaller population than Hamilton…) 😉

    • ElectricGecko

I like that picture of Phoebe too. And the Hamilton ‘mountain’ (as Hamiltonians call it) is a cliff that is part of the Niagara Escarpment – the same cliff with the famous falls. It’s very convenient for getting beautiful views of the city. (And yes, Hamilton DOES have beautiful views, just not from the angle a lot of people see it at from the highway.)

It’s a unique feature of my city that ‘downtown Hamilton’ is quite literally lower in elevation from the rest of the city. This is something I didn’t know was unique when I was a kid. I thought all downtowns and uptowns were divided by giant cliff faces. Silly me.

    • SalemCat

I never get tired of pictures of Hamilton.

      😛

Could we have a Hamilton Christmas ?

  • SalemCat

My friend “The Doc” – he’s the Mad Scientist down the street (he hates that term – he says he is rarely angry) scored a new creature for his Menagerie this morning – DRAGON.

In the past he’s re-animated Cats, and Cerberus (3-headed dog), but this will be the largest and potentially most dangerous creature yet.

I hope he’s stocked up on chains.

  • mermaidan

If an especially HOT Phoebe can endorse Hamilton. Ontario, it can’t be all bad.

  • ChrisH

@mermaidan, yes, in fact, that’s what hot Phoebe is for. 🙂

  • “I guess I should’ve had the courage to ask you, though you DID make it clear any guy shouldn’t ask you”

“But you’re not ANY guy, Ty”

“But I am A guy. A regular guy with regular feelings. It’d be nice if you remembered that sometimes”

    “……………..”

    • ElectricGecko

I like that. But it wouldn’t fit in the panel.

Honestly, it is very hard to find expressions brief enough to fit in these panels. Everyone has to be very succinct, and lots gets left on the cutting room floor.
